About Kingman AZ

Lt. Edward Fitzgerald Beale, from the U.S. Navy, was asked by the War Department to construct a government cart road across the 35th Parallel and to test if camels were viable to use as pack animals in the southwestern desert. Beale passed through the area in 1857 studying the land and again in 1859 to build a road. Beale’s Wagon Road would later be important for the construction of Highway 66 and many families looking for a faster track to a prosperous life out west.

Officially founded in 1882, when it was still only a territory, Kingman Arizona was named for Lewis Kingman, a civil engineer who was called to survey the building of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad from Winslow, Arizona to Beale’s Springs, just a short distance from the town of Kingman.

Today Kingman is the heart of historic Route 66. It is boasted as having the longest remaining preserved stretch of the famous all-American road that runs right through the middle of downtown. Kingman is still the perfect launching point for Route 66 road trips.
